Understanding how leverage and margin interact with a forex robot’s position sizing is not an advanced topic reserved for experienced traders. It is foundational knowledge that every automated trader must grasp before attaching an EA to a live account. What Leverage Actually Does

Leverage allows a trader to control a position size larger than the capital they actually deposit. A 1% move in the trader’s favour on a $100,000 position generates a $1,000 gain, doubling the $1,000 deposit. The same 1% move against the position generates a $1,000 loss, erasing the deposit completely.

For a forex robot, leverage acts as a scaling mechanism applied to every trade the EA opens. A robot configured to trade 1.0 standard lots on a $1,000 account uses extremely high effective leverage, because a standard lot controls $100,000 of currency. Even small adverse price moves on that position consume a significant percentage of available margin. A robot that calculates its lot size as a fixed percentage of current account equity, typically between 1% and 3% risk per trade, automatically scales its positions to a level the account can support regardless of the leverage ratio the broker provides. This approach, known as percentage-based or dynamic position sizing, keeps the dollar risk per trade proportional to the account balance at all times.

In contrast, a robot that uses a fixed lot size regardless of account balance ignores the relationship between position size and available margin entirely. As the account grows, the fixed lot represents a smaller and smaller percentage of equity, which is conservative. However, as the account shrinks during a drawdown, the fixed lot represents a larger and larger percentage of available margin, which accelerates the rate at which losses consume free margin and pushes the account toward a margin call faster than a percentage-based approach would. Moreover, many robot developers publish recommended minimum account balances specifically because the robot’s default lot sizes are calibrated to work safely only above a certain equity threshold. Running the robot below that threshold on the same default lot settings increases margin call risk substantially.

Practical Steps to Manage Leverage and Margin Safely

The first practical step is to confirm the broker’s margin call and stop-out levels before going live. These figures appear in the broker’s trading conditions documentation. Knowing exactly at what margin level percentage the broker starts closing positions allows the trader to set their own internal alert threshold well above that number, giving them time to intervene manually if necessary.

The second step is to use a position size calculator or the robot’s built-in percentage-based lot sizing to verify that each trade risks no more than 1% to 2% of current account equity. This calculation should account for the stop loss distance on the specific pair and timeframe the robot trades, because the same lot size carries different dollar risk on a trade with a 10-pip stop than on a trade with a 50-pip stop.

The third step is to avoid running the robot on an account balance below the developer’s stated minimum. In addition, if the account experiences a significant drawdown, reducing the lot size temporarily, either manually or by lowering the percentage risk input, keeps the margin level stable while the account recovers. This adjustment costs some recovery speed, but it eliminates the risk of a margin call turning a recoverable drawdown into a permanent account loss.
